Standard Consultations

Consultations with the doctor are available during the morning surgery when patients are seen on a 'first come, first served' basis. The standard consultation time is 15 minutes. Please be aware that emergencies and cases of urgent clinical need may be given priority. On blood collection days, persons attending for a blood test may be given priority if time is short before the boat leaves because samples need to be transported the same day for most tests.

Extended Consultations

Extended consultations may be booked in the afternoon surgery. The usual duration of an extended consultation is 30 minutes. Please book this if you feel that you have more than two problems that you would like to discuss. Longer consultations are also needed for procedures such as ear syringing, ECG, spirometry and minor surgery.

Blood Tests

Blood tests are taken by the doctor at the start of the morning surgery on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Fasting blood tests may be needed to assess glucose and cholesterol levels accurately. If you are asked to fast for the blood test, please do not eat or drink anything apart from water from 10pm the night before until after the blood test. You can take your medication as usual. Please contact the surgery if you have any questions and to confirm that blood tests are being done, particularly if the sea conditions are bad.

Contraception and Sexual Health

We provide contraceptive advice and screeing for sexually transmitted infections at the surgery. This includes prescription of oral contraceptives and the injectable longer term contraceptive and testing/treatment for chlamydia, gonorrhoea and other infections. Intrauterine devices ('coils') can be removed here but fitting these devices is not currently available. We can help you arrange this to be fitted locally if required. If you would prefer to use the services on Guernsey for sexual health screening, please contact the Guernsey Family Planning Service on 01481 714954 or visit www.familyplanning.gg

Childhood Immunisations

We provide all the standard childhood immunisations here at the surgery in accordance with the UK immunisation schedule. Immunisations for children are provided free of charge by Guernsey and a nominal fee for each injection is charged to the patient in accordance with BMA rates. No consultation fee is charged. We would like to encourage parents to bring their children for immunisation at the appropriate intervals. We will continue to remind those who have not attended unless we are informed in writing that they no longer wish to participate in the programme. Parents who have opted out can choose for their children to rejoin at any time. We will make every effort to assist those in financial difficulty to ensure all that need immunisation are given this on time. For further information on immunisation, please visit www.immunisation.nhs.uk

Medical Examinations

Medical examinations can be arranged for driving licenses and other licensing requirements. Diving medical examinations are not available at present. There are no formal 'well man' or 'well woman' checks, however all the usual tests are available - please discuss your needs with the doctor.

Electrocardiography (ECG)

We have two ECG machines which are used to produce an elecrical picture of your heart's activity. This test is indicated when investigating symptoms such as chest pain and palpitations and is also used for screening in medical examinations.

Cardiac Event Monitoring

This device may be borrowed by patients for the purpose of capturing an episode of abnormal heart activity when the patient is not at the surgery. It is simple to use and the information is downloaded for interpretation at the practice.

Spirometry

Spirometry is used to assess how well the lungs are working. It can be used in the diagnosis and monitoring of lung conditions and also as a screening tool in medical examinations.

Ear Syringing

We have an electronic device for removing ear wax at the surgery. Ears should not normally require syringing but if you are concerned that your ears are blocked with wax, please come for a consultation with the doctor first. Please avoid putting anything into the ear canal, in particular do not use cotton buds as they can cause damage to the ear canal and cause the wax to impact upon the ear drum. If your ears need syringing, you may be advised to used standard olive oil drops twice a day for a week before this is done. This allows the wax to soften so that less pressure is required to remove it, thereby reducing the risk of damaging the ear in the process.

Wound Care

We have wound cleansing agents and dressings for the management of most wounds from simple cuts and grazes to chronic ulceration and postoperative wound care. Mrs Shannon Counsell (Registered Nurse) is experienced in wound management. Please contact the surgery with your requirements.

Minor Surgery

We are able to provide some minor surgical procedures at the surgery. These include suturing of lacerations, nasal cautery, joint injection and removal of small skin lesions under local anaesthetic. Procedures are considered on a case-by-case basis. More complex cases are referred to the appropriate secondary care speciality e.g. plastic surgery, ENT or orthopedics.

Travel Health

Travel immunisations are available at the surgery. Please book an appointment to discuss your requirements or email your travel destination, dates and style of travel (hotel tourist, backpacker, volunteer worker etc.) to the surgery and we can provide you with a travel brief and arrange the necessary immunisations. Ideally you should arrange this 8 week prior to travelling but if time is short we will do our best to accomodate. There is usually a small stock of immunisations at the practice but we prefer to order them in on request which takes approximatley one week. Yellow fever immunisation is not available here but we can help you to arrange this locally.
